There are many, many different hobbies that people enjoy. My hobby is model railroading. How did I start in model railroading and why? My interest in trains started when I was young. All my life, I have lived by a main railroad yard, and there wouldn’t be a day that passed that you didn’t hear a train horn. Train engines just always fascinated me. My favorite engines are the steam locomotives. They are huge and powerful, with a very distinctive noise as steam is forced out through their pipes.

When I first got involved with my model railroad layout, I found myself perplexed. Model railroading requires you to learn many different skills: construction, electric, artistic, and landscaping. You don’t need to be a professional at them, but you do need a basic knowledge of them. Having a hobby helps you deal with stress, can bring you joy and happiness, and can also bring frustration and confusion. I have experienced all of these in my hobby. What I found that model railroading does for me best is let me be creative. I can create towns, mountains, hillsides, ponds, and lakes. You also become a problem solver.

No hobby is without its problems, so it’s up to you to find a workable solution. The best thing about hobbies is that it’s all about you. No one else has to like it. No one can tell you how to do it. The only one that needs to be happy with the results is you. It might sound kind of selfish, but that is what the intent of a hobby is for. Hobbies are a small sliver of time set aside just for you—a way to escape the frustrations and demands of everyday life.

For me, time spent on my hobby lets me refocus on life because it allows me time to recharge my batteries by getting my mind to focus not on what is straight in front of me, but it lets me see the big picture.

I often hear people say that Christians don’t have any fun. They have only one focus, and their religion is full of dos and don’ts.

Actually, that statement is far from the truth. I believe Christians have more fun. Here are just some of the reasons why.

Christians don’t see the dos and don’ts, simply because our goal is to please Christ. That is our only focus—not worrying about what the world thinks or what other people think. As long as we strive to please Christ, we don’t have to worry about dos and don’ts.

There is fun in being with fellow believers. When we gather at church or in our homes, even at work, we are all of one mind. While we may have work tasks, worshiping or enjoying each other with laughter, there is unity and a silent bond. We are part of a huge family—a sense of belonging to one another.

We have no fear of being caught. Our focus, again, is on Christ. Christ, who is without sin, is trustworthy, honorable, compassionate, and full of grace. When you’re striving to be like Christ, you’re working at being pure—pure in heart, pure in mind, and pure in deeds.

Christians don’t see fun the way the world sees fun. Our joy is not wrapped up in worldly pleasures.

Having a hobby is a way you can refocus your mind on something that is relaxing and doesn’t involve any pressure on deadlines, whether it’s done right or if it will pass inspection.

Having a hobby is a great way to help relieve the everyday stress of life. It allows us to settle our minds and focus on what matters to us the most.
